The History of Checkers
Checkers is one of the oldest known board games. Archaeological evidence suggests that a form of checkers was played in the ancient city of Ur around 3000 BCE. The modern version of the game that we know today was standardized in France during the 12th century, where it was called "Fierges" and later "Jeu de Dames."
The game spread across Europe and eventually to the Americas, where it became known as "Checkers" in the United States and "Draughts" in the United Kingdom. Despite its apparent simplicity, checkers has a staggering number of possible game positions — approximately 500 billion trillion (5×10²⁰) — making it a deeply strategic game.
